Chosen People Called to Proclaim
Following our theme for this quinquennium “Chosen People Called to Proclaim “, the units in Southern and East Africa area visited the Lord Orphan Care Home in Kambuzuma Township, Harare, Zimbabwe two days before our Area Consultative Meeting. A total of seven units took part in this initiative.
The outreach team led by Mrs Ellen Charimari, who identified the home as a worthy recipient and a needs list was compiled together with Mrs Letty Mhizha, founder of Lord Orphan Care Home. The Area President Sipiwe Chisvo and Vice President Patricia Mapani led a delegation to Lord Orphan Care Home and handed over a 5000 litre water tank and 82 blankets. Unfortunately Mrs Letty Mhizha could not witness the handing over of the donations as she was called to rest by our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on April 14th. May your soul rest in eternal peace.
Lord Orphan Care Home is a halfway home that caters for vulnerable children, aged 5-19year from Kambuzuma Township. It was registered in 1998 and is founded on the Christian principles of James 1:27 “Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.” Letty Mhizha founded the care centre nineteen years ago after she received an instruction in her dreams to go to a specific house in her neighbourhood. She was obedient to the instruction and she went to the house the very morning. She found five orphaned children, 4 girls and a small boy living and caring for themselves in this house as both parents had passed away. She knew they needed parental care and support. She approached her two neighbours Mr Machaka and another lady, they agreed to help and assist the children. Letty Mhizha took the children to her house.
What started as an instruction in a dream to care for 5 children has ended up as a home for the 82 children who are assisted with school fees, clothing, food and shelter to do their homework. They have managed to continue sustaining the centre because of the support they receive from churches in their area. They also now have friends of the home and some well-wishers who are assisting with donations. Two children are in boarding school and their school fees are paid for by a well-wisher. Lord Orphan Care was registered in 1998. This centre is a great relief from a horrible HIV & AIDS epidemic where several parents and bread winners passed away.
WFMUCW Southern and East Africa Area made a difference to the lives of these vulnerable children. United Methodist Church in Zimbabwe through their Women’s Coordinator Mrs Rebecca Gurupira supports the care centre with 90kgs of mealie meal every month. The staff and children gave a heart-warming appreciation to the Presidency and members of the Southern and East Africa Area.
Our purpose as an area is to bring the love of Jesus to all people and to be always in service to the world and for us that’s true religion in line with our theme, ”O Therefore as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility and gentleness and patience.” Colossians 3:12
