The Women’s Work representatives of Guyana District, Methodist Church in the Caribbean and the Americas (MCCA) have paid tribute to Rev’d Glenna Spencer whose sudden death on 11 May 2020 in Antigua, where she worked at the MCCA Conference office, has left them shocked and greatly saddened.
The Methodist Church, Guyana District mourns the passing of our beloved Rev’d Glenna Spencer, A.A., fondly referred to by many as ‘Sis. Glenna’.
Rev’d Spencer was a faithful, humble servant whose entire life was dedicated to the service of God and His church. Her ministry began at a very early age at Friendship Methodist Church and spanned many decades.
She was the first female President of the Guyana District, the first female to be inducted Bishop in the Methodist Church in the Caribbean and the Americas (MCCA) and the first female to serve as Connexional Secretary. Rev’d Spencer’s itinerary facilitated her involvement in every circuit in the District and on every District Committee.
She will particularly be remembered for her work among children and young people: organizing camps, youth rallies and seminars that would facilitate their spiritual growth. She was instrumental in the production of the Children’s Bible Reading Chart and the Living Water Devotional.
Further to her drive promoting the spiritual and educational well-being of the young people, Rev’d Spencer collaborated with the Methodist Church in Britain – National in Mission programme. Through this venture, the Hope Programme was birthed and funded for five years. It served to improve the academic, aesthetic as well as the spiritual, physical, and moral scope of school aged youths in the surrounding underprivileged area. Under her tenure as Superintendent of the Berbice Circuit, the first Day Care and Play School was opened at the Rosignol Congregation. She was also the driving force behind the establishment of the Sure Foundation Day Care and Play School in 2013, Rev’d Spencer was also instrumental in the formation of the Trinity Steel Band.
As District President, she implemented the District’s Lay Training programme which resulted in many preachers being fully accredited.
Through her dedicated ministry she led many to Christ and to a deeper relationship with Him. Her leadership propelled many to discover their gifts and calling within the community of faith and beyond: as ordained ministers, as professional and practitioners in other fields. Her goal was to know Christ and to make Him known to others, leading to the transformation of life and ultimately the nation.
Her exemplary work in the Church and by extension the nation, did not go unnoticed and she received the Achievement Award in 2016.
Rev’d Glenna Leris Denise Spencer was called to higher service on May 11, 2020, sending shockwaves throughout the Guyana District and the entire Connexion. Like Paul, she has fought the good fight, finished her race here on earth, she has kept the faith and has now gone on to receive the crown which her Lord and Master has in store for her.
May her soul Rest in Peace and Rise in Glory.
