Area Officers
Matilda Johnson was born in Banjul, on 7th August 1958. She is married to James Wilfred Johnson, Deputy Director, Gambia Revenue Authority and their union is blessed with 4 four children (2 girls and 2 boys).
She is the currently Convenor of the Women’s Affairs and Family Life Sub-Committee of the Gambia Christian Council; Assistant Secretary to the Methodist Conference; Society Steward at Wesley Cathedral; President of the Methodist Women’s Federation, The Gambia, President of YWCA The Gambia and Board member of Youth for Christ .
Matilda is a Chartered Librarian and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, (CILIP), UK. She is also a Principal Management Trainer at the Management Development Institute (MDI) a part time lecturer for the University of The Gambia. Matilda is a gender and peace activist, a child advocate and has represented Christian women and The Methodist Church at forums both in her country and abroad. She is a founder member of WIPNET (Women in peace building network) . She serves on the Board of pro-Hope International, (an NGO focused on women’s empowerment, youths and children), and part-time Administrative Secretary to the Network on Gender- based violence The Gambia.
Matilda is a registered international UNV and she has served in the Electoral and Civic divisions of various UN Peacekeeping missions abroad, namely, South Africa; East Timor and Kosovo.
Matilda is a poet and has co- authored a collection of poems titled – The Repeal, published in 2005. She has written several articles published in newspapers on: library and information management, poems on various themes, and is currently working on a teenage fiction novel.
Her interests are: reading, writing, current affairs, travelling and meeting people.
