I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word, I put my hope. My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning. (Psalm 130 : 5 – 6)
In the beautiful Psalm 130, David declares that he is willing to wait for the fulfilling of God’s word. He says Lord we trust that as we are waiting, you are working, and our hope is in your word. I read these verses and think, this is indeed a season of waiting in so many ways.
Advent is a period before Christmas which we should be quietly joyful because Jesus was born as human baby and brought us the gifts: hope and faith, peace, love and joy. His first coming at the first Christmas when he was born as human baby in a stable in Bethlehem. But it also refers to his second coming. You can make productive use of the time before Christmas every year by anticipating the coming of Jesus and preparing yourself for it and setting your mind on it.
It remains a miracle that Jesus was willing to leave heaven and come to earth, to come and die a cruel dearth on the cross to make it possible for us to go to heaven. And even a greater miracle is that He has promised to come again to defeat the powers of sin for all time. The coming of Jesus to the world had one message: God loved the world so much that He sent His only Son to a sinful world to die on the cross so that it would be possible, for your sins and mine to be forgiven. At this Advent time think about the extent of God’s love for you, while you are waiting for His Second Coming, and remind Him of His covenant promises.
This Advent may we praise Him for His first coming to this world that made it possible for us to become children of God, but also for the promise that He will come again to take us to be with Him forever. Let us thank our Heavenly Father for placing the life of His Son at stake so that our sins could be forgiven. Every day this Christmas month let us meditate on the extent of God’s love to us.
As World Federation of Methodist and Uniting Church Women let us go and bear these fruits of peace, love and joy during this special time.
